Stay Warm This Winter Without Wasting Energy — or the Planet

Winter in Britain means cold houses, rising energy bills and the temptation to crank the heating up and leave it there. But staying warm doesn't have to mean burning through energy — or buying a load of plastic-heavy products to do it. Here are a few things that actually work.

Stop the heat escaping

The cheapest warm-up is the one that doesn't let heat out in the first place. Draught-proof your doors and windows before you touch the thermostat. A well-fitted door seal or draught excluder makes a measurable difference to how long a room holds heat — and costs a fraction of what you'd spend on extra heating over a winter.

Layer up with natural materials

Wool, cotton and linen retain warmth far better than synthetic fleece, and they're biodegradable at end of life. An extra layer at home before turning the heating up is the oldest trick in the book — and the most effective.

Warm drinks, made properly

There's a reason people have been drinking hot herbal infusions through winter for generations. KUKER wild herb teas, gathered in the Rhodope mountains of Bulgaria, and Asmi Ayurveda blends are both warming, plastic-free and genuinely good. A proper cup of something hot does more for warmth than most people give it credit for.

Rethink your heating habits

Heating the whole house all day costs far more than heating the rooms you're actually in. A programmable thermostat, timer or smart plug can cut bills significantly without any loss of comfort. Heat the space, not the air.

Light candles intentionally

Beyond ambiance, candles in a room genuinely add a small amount of warmth — and change how a cold evening feels entirely. Ralph's Orchard hand-poured candles, made in small British batches without palm oil or plastic packaging, are the ones we'd reach for.

Small changes that compound

None of these are dramatic. But draught-proofing, layering, cutting heating hours and choosing products made to last rather than to be thrown away — they add up across a winter, both in energy saved and waste avoided.
